Maslow’s Hierarchy of eLearning Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of eLearning NeedsAbraham Maslow did wonders for understanding human needs and motivations by creating a simple and applicable scale. After creating his scale, called the Hierarchy of Needs, Maslow himself started to apply his work to various disciplines. Following in this trend, the principles of his Hierarchy can be applied directly to the work an eLearning team performs.

We’ll start by discussing the individual levels of the eLearning hierarchy and then wrap up what it means for you in your position.

Time and Resources
To be successful, a team’s most basic needs have to be aligned so they can reach their goals. Having abundant resources and time and using them effectively can set your team on a higher level than others.

Capacity

The second level is all about bandwidth. It doesn’t matter whether doing something is possible; if the team doesn’t have capacity for projects they won’t get done. Being overloaded is the biggest foe in the capacity category.

“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.”
-William Shakespeare

Skills & Competence
Teams are elevated by the skill of their members. Honed skills that are turned into competencies can lift your entire training department. Cohesion and success are the results when time is taken to improve the craft of each individual ID, Developer, or Designer.

“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
-Aristotle

Peak Experiences
These experiences are the “natural high” of the eLearning world. At eLearning Brothers we call this the “Rockstar!” feeling. At this level, the team has done what formerly was impossible: they have fulfilled all goals and reached the top.

As is true with real mountain peaks, it is difficult and demanding to satisfy the entire Hierarchy. If your team is struggling to reach the summit, don’t get discouraged, you can make it! For some teams, outside help can really help them to reach Peak Experiences. We are around to make sure you make it to the top. Our Custom eLearning team has been elevating customers and their visions for years and we want to help YOU reach your highest potential and become an eLearning Rockstar!
