Quality Matters Monday: Standard 5.2

It’s Quality Matters Monday! Each Monday, we highlight a Quality Matters standard and review its importance in an online course and how we evaluate this
standard.

Today, we are reviewing Quality Matters Standards 5.2.

General Standard 5 addresses course activities and learner interaction to meet the learning objective goals.

This standard specifically addresses that learning activities provide opportunities for interaction that support active learning.

QM Standard 5.2 states: “Activities encourage learners’ engagement through different types of interaction as appropriate to the course. Interactions are
designed as activities to support the course objectives or competencies and may vary with the discipline, purpose, and level of the course. Look for the
purpose of the interactions and not just the number of opportunities for interaction. Types of interaction include learner-instructor, learner-content, and
learner-learner. Active learning involves learners engaging by “doing” something, such as discovering, processing, or applying concepts and information.
Active learning entails guiding learners to increasing levels of responsibility for their own learning.

AP Guidance: QM Standard 5.2 evaluates engagement on three components: student-content interaction, student-student interaction, and student-instructor
interaction. AP recommends providing a General Course Questions board or some sort of communicative element that allows students to engage with you and one
another. The following Prezi has many helpful ideas. But some of the social media contacts at the end are dated. Follow us on Twitter@APCommons and Pinterest at APFaculty eCommons same for LinkedIn.
