Evaluating web-based tools for ELT

In his workshop, Nik Peachey takes us to look together at some web and mobile applications and establish criteria by which we can evaluate them to ensure we use tools that will lead to enhanced language learning.

Onestopenglish has a great collection of articles and video recorded sessions about Tech Tools for Teachers by Nik Peachey.

He asked the audience to share their favourite apps and tools by using  Todaysmeet. Some of the answers were: (the answers will stay on this site for a week)
Google docs, FB, Voicethread, Photobable, Sounds apps, Skype, Grindr, Blurp, Storywheel – iOs app, Screencastomatic, Jing, Audioboo, Voxopop, Padlet, Voki, Storybird,

When Nik started teaching there were  basically two types of websites:

  • Generic: Like BBC, you can have access but you have to create your material for your teaching
  • Dedicated: You you can go and there’s material for teachers to use

Then, Post Web 2.0 there has been what he calls, a democratisation of Internet and there are companies providing platforms where teachers can create content and share it

Generic Tools and Apps

Attendees participated intensively sharing their tools and Apps using http://todaysmeet.com/NikPeachey but I guess this link will be available for a short time only. The following tools are the one Nik Peachey mentioned

Keek: Video Journal app

Blipfoto: Daily Photo Journal

Mailvu.com: Video recorded messages

Tellagami: To create animated characters

Draw.io: To create infographics

Beta.mural.ly: A creative project space

Finally Nik Peachey presented his own Criteria for making correct decisions about Tools and Apps
