Introducing Literature Circles

I introduced literature circles to my class this year by using The Pearl by John Steinbeck. As suggested in much of the literature on this teaching strategy, we began the process using roles sheets. The premise for this idea is for students to learn to work collaboratively and gain confidence and trust in working in groups through the use of the role sheets.
Let It Snow

Today it snowed both inside and out as I used a “snowball” activity to introduce our wikispace literature discussions and appropriately Mother Nature gave us our first snowfall to set the stage.

Am I Running Out Of Time?
I wonder how much tech I need to teach before it becomes tech class instead of English class. It seems that much of September has been eaten up with getting students comfortable with using new technologies that are accessible and useful for our class.
one to one
Our school is implementing a one to one computer initiative with grade nine students this year. It is quite a change for many staff and students but one that truly should be a part of every student’s education. Many teachers have embraced the idea while others are not finding technology useful in their curriculum.

The New Year
I began this school year somewhat differently than usual. My classes began group work right away. I did not wait till they were “ready” and I felt they knew their responsibilities well enough to work with others. We began our year together getting to know each other through small group work.
